Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike resigns from the ruling United National Party (UNP) and forms the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) gathering the 'Pancha Mahaa Balawêgaya (5 Great Forces), Sangha (Buddhist Clergy), Wedha (Doctors), Guru (Teachers), Govi (Farmers) & Kamkaru (Workers).

March 02nd - Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake (04 year 01 month rule) falls from a Horse & dies. Honoured as the 'Father of the Nation'.

Dudley Senanayake, son of the 1st Prime Minister D.S.Senanayake & Minister of Agriculture becomes 02nd Prime Minister after the death of his father, D.S. Senanayake.

May ~ June - General Elections - United National Party wins & Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake (02 month rule) reappointed as the Prime Minster for the2nd time with 14 Ministers.

August 12th - Civil Unrest due to taking off the Rice subsidy. 9 killed by the Armed Forces.

October - Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake (01 year 03 month rule) resigns due to the above problem.

Sir John Kothalawela, Deputy Leader of the ruling United National Party appointed as 03rd Prime Minister after the resignation of Dudley Senanayake.
